graf·fi·ti [gruhfee-tee] Pronunciation KeyShow IPA Pronunciation –noun

1. pl. of graffito.
2. (used with a plural verb) markings, as initials, slogans, or drawings, written, spray-painted, or sketched on a sidewalk, wall of a building or public restroom, or the like: These graffiti are evidence of the neighborhood’s decline.
3. (used with a singular verb) such markings as a whole or as constituting a particular group: Not much graffiti appears around here these days.

As one of the cornerstones of Hip-Hop culture graffiti often goes unnoticed and under appreciated. While there are those that still participate in this craft on varying levels, it has formed somewhat of a subculture of it own and doesnt really mind being flying under the radar. More after the the commute.

Graffiti’s Hip-Hop counterparts (music, dance and language) while all more acclaimed and noticed by “the establishment” are also more commercialized and diluted. This absence from the mainstream has served the craft well in keeping it somewhat pure. The vast majority writers care very little about you knowing who they are in person. The emphasis is almost always directed toward their body of work. This attitude has gone along way to keep the craft relatively poor and all the more deserving of some appreciation.

In attempt to show at least a little appreciation here’s a nice collection of graffiti videos. The artist and his craft in action. Also I’ve added a number of links to some nice graffiti websites. Enjoy!
