MUSIC: Save Sedgwick

16 01 2008

To many music fans, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is more recognizable than 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. While the latter address has done little for a distinct sect of the population, the former is the hip hop historical site – the General Sedgwick House in the Bronx.

In the summer of ’73, DJ Kool Herc threw a block party that started the musical phenomenon. Just over 30 years later, “the Birthplace of Hip Hop” became eligible to become a federal landmark.

However, the building was recently sold to a developer who plans on removing it from the affordable housing program. This means rates will rise and tenants will either have to pony up more cash or face eviction. Now, the 1520 Sedgwick Tenant Association needs your help!

For more info on how to help, take the commute.

The two have teamed up to celebrate the release of the latest GFK album The Big Doe Rehab. The deck and t-shirt combo use the familiar Ben Franklins stuffed into a pill jar. The set, limited to a release of 500, is only available through a number of upcoming Zoo York and/or Def Jam promotions both online and in-store. Then of course some will make their way to Ebay.

Five for the Grind 1/14 (A Day Late)

15 01 2008

Eff a Monday.  Class is in session, back to the gym, no dope new releases to dig into,  and my lil homie Bynum is gonna be hurt for the next 2 months.  I need some of that good old fashioned I Hate Everything music courtesy of Joe Budden.  Does anyone in hip-hop history do that near-suicidal introspective ish as well as Budden?  I think not
